You are in charge of your own results

Have you ever had an injury, or been diagnosed with a condition and expected it to be a ‘quick fix’?

Some people might even think the problem may just go away on its’ own.

For some things this may be the case, however most things will take time and require some form of effort and commitment.

It seems to me that there is a fear of taking responsibility or ownership of your body as there is always the thought “What if I don’t reach my goals?” or “what if I fail?”. Then there is the aspect of feeling disheartened if you don’t see results or progress immediately.

I’m here to tell you “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. Things take time, particularly with the body. We have to be patient with ourselves, listen to our body and adapt and change our recovery or exercises.

An Exercise Physiologist is here to help you, we don’t want to see you fail as much as you don’t want to fail!

It may not be as quick and easy as you would like, however we are on the same team and will help you with your recovery to achieve your goals. It is all about consistency. My mother always used to tell me “You only get out what you put in” and I still think it’s a great saying to live by.

You may not want to take ownership of your recovery or condition and you are probably thinking “That’s why I came to see a professional”. Don’t get me wrong we are here to help you but we are not going to be there with you 24 hours a day 7 days a week (nor do I think my clients would want that…). Chances are we are going to see you on average once or twice a week for an hour which will work out to be only 1% of your week. So, what you are doing the other 99% of your week can definitely impact your recovery or progress.

During the rest of that week I am always contactable by my clients should they have any questions with their exercises and to help manage any unexpected outcomes or barriers that may arise. There are two types of people at this fork in the road. If something arises there will be people that see this as an excuse to put a halt to their recovery and wait till their next appointment to work out a solution, or there will be the proactive type (the ones that have taken ownership) to reach out and adapt or use the skills discussed with their EP about how to overcome these barriers. This will also depend on what stage of change we are at, which I touched on in my Blog on Motivation. I also like to think of these so called ‘barriers’ as hurdles. There are many ways to get to the other side of a hurdle, over, under, around or even kick that hurdle over and step over it! They are not a road block where you turn and walk back to where you started. Having an Exercise Physiologist to help with your injury or condition makes it easier and has the right solutions for you to getting past that hurdle.

With my clients I try to give them independence with their recovery (given that it is viable with their condition or injury). I find it gives them motivation to continue with their training and new lifestyle once they start seeing results, as they know that they have put in the effort to achieve that. I also see this work in the opposite way with clients losing motivation if they don’t see results in this ‘quick fix’ time frame. This is where the stages of change play a big part as you have to be prepared and ready to change mentally before you can physically.

If you know compliance is something you struggle with you may need to have more frequent sessions initially or as a long-term solution. Everyone is different so therefore will require different treatment for the same condition or injury, have different rehabilitation programs and will have different outcomes. Take ownership for your condition or injury and work with your Exercise Physiologist towards a common goal. We will be there to help you but you have to meet us half way. We are on your team!
